Mauricio Leal, Co-Owner & CEO

After following the straight and narrow through college, Mauricio realized that although being a nerd came naturally, he just wasn’t driven to sit behind a desk, writing computer code for wind turbines. Even if it was somehow helping, he felt removed from people by several degrees, and wanted to do something more impactful; to help real people and communities on the ground level. So in 2008 — just 9 months into his full-time job out of university, he decided to jump ship, and began his journey into Fitness and entrepreneurship. After much soul-searching and test driving of different methodologies (NASM certified first), he stumbled upon some CrossFit workouts, and was skeptical and disinterested. “What kind of random garbage was this?” he thought. So he ignored it for a while and kept following the templates of traditional training with his friends and neighbors in the local park, but knew something was missing.

Mauricio had played many sports throughout high school with Football and Track, and kept active throughout college with Triathlon and B-boying (from which CrossFit Cypher gets its name). There was always a sense of training purpose and intensity in these sports and artforms. It was visceral; you could feel it when someone was feeling it. It was something that the templates of traditional training seemed to decidedly lack, as there was a lot of fluff and no substance. 3 sets of 10 crunches and bosu ball squats were definitely not the biz.  Fast forward to one gymnastics mishap and a broken arm later, followed by months of rehab, he had ample time to do more research on Fitness and Nutrition, and was drawn towards the elegant and evidence-based approach present in much of CrossFit’s founding literature. There was something you could measure, there was substance.

After finally rehabbing enough to get back into exercise, in April 2010 he decided to dive headfirst into CrossFit by signing up for the Level 1 Certification. What better way to find out what it’s all about than there? He did his first “Fran” workout with Jason Khalipa as his judge, had a rough time with it, and was hooked. He had found his people and his calling.

Mauricio redoubled his efforts to develop a client-base with this new approach, took a ‘do-it-yourself’ approach to build a personal training business out of his garage with lots of homemade functional equipment (concrete kettlebells!), and went door-to-door recruiting clients and coaching them in their garages, patios, and living rooms. This eventually led to a group class in a local park, a partnership with a fellow trainer, constructing a parking lot gym, a year of growth and new challenges, some hard lessons, a tough partnership breakup, and the call to start again on his own.

It was risky to move far away, he would probably lose all of his current clients — relationships that took years to build. But there was no going back at this point; he felt closer to the other side. So once again he took a leap and in 2012 founded CrossFit Cypher here in Richmond, CA. Since then, vulnerability and forging ahead have become forces of habit that he carries on to this day, and exemplifies the timeless idea of leaning into this moment, AKA stepping into the Cypher, again and again.

Mauricio constantly drives and encourages clients to experience and express themselves through movement as they simultaneously embark on a very personal and communal journey through health and fitness. Having coached over 4000 hours of 1-on-1 and group sessions, and competed at a high level in the Sport of Fitness, he has had time to practice and sharpen his skills, and discover what matters most to people (it’s not your muscles or Fran time). The path to results and success in our community for clients of all levels has never been more clear. CrossFit is changing lives on a global scale, and Mauricio hopes to play an important role in helping foment this revolution of health, movement, and lifestyle.

Leslie Macedo, Co-Owner & CFO

Leslie has always been passionate about athletics, movement, and health. She traveled to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for school on a softball scholarship, where she majored in Exercise Science and minored in Coaching. During her collegiate career, Leslie thrived in the weight room and thoroughly enjoyed working hard on to improve her strength, which resulted in Strength & Conditioning All-American honors from The National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) in 2007. With power behind her swing, Leslie became the first Miamian to top more than 100 career RBIs and finished her career as one of Miami’s most prolific offensive players.

Leslie began CrossFitting during the Fall of 2010. The family atmosphere and camaraderie created in class reminded her of working out with her teammates in college. Her passion for strength, health and wellness had been reignited. She became a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer in July 2013. While she enjoys the competition component of CrossFit, what Leslie enjoys most about CrossFit is the community. She truly believes that anyone who walks in the doors of CrossFit Cypher – whether they are elite athletes, former athletes, weekend warriors, or have never stepped inside of a gym – can accomplish feats of physical strength they once thought impossible. She is always touched by the raw celebrations not only from the individual who may have completed his/her first pull-up, but touched by the reaction of the rest of the Cypher class who witnessed this great feat. This connection and commitment is what Leslie believes makes CrossFit – and CrossFit Cypher – so special.

Diego Delgadillo, Cypher Coach

Coach Diego Delgadillo started training CrossFit on January 6, 2014 at CrossFit Cypher. He liked it at first as a hobby, but as time went on he saw that it had the potential to be a lifestyle and career for him. Diego studied and learned as much as he could about each of the foundational movements, despite the fact that it was all taught in English, and he did not understand any of it. But thanks to God and his family at CrossFit Cypher, Diego has been able to steadily improve his English, and throughout that process has worked tirelessly on becoming a better person each and every day.

After two years of learning about CrossFit and fitness as a member, Diego had the opportunity to talk with the Cypher Owners about his future. They asked him about his goals and what he wanted for his future. When he spoke about his passion for sharing his experiences and helping people through CrossFit, that was when the doors opened for him to become a Cypher Coach. It has been one of Diego’s greatest goals, and he enjoys helping other people so much, as they have constantly supported him along the way as well. Diego wants to continue working every day, striving more and more to achieve his own goals, and being a role model and Coach to help others do the same.

Zack Ziegler, Cypher Coach

Zack‘s CrossFit journey began in the spring of 2011 while attending college in Colorado. He can’t remember the exact details of his first workout but it involved running over two miles and a lot of thrusters. Somewhere in the second round of thrusters he started to strip some weight from the bar and was infamously told “Come on Zack! That’s not what CrossFit is about…” He smiled at the coach, kept taking the weight off the bar, and finished the workout dead last.  The feeling of accomplishment after completing a tough WOD and wanting to continuously get better was enough to keep him coming back. Not just for the WODs later in the week, but back to CrossFit as a whole after some long breaks due to laziness, injuries, and/or work. He joined CrossFit Cypher in the fall of 2016 after one of those “breaks” and has enjoyed being a part of the community while improving his own health and fitness.  Outside of the gym Zack holds a full-time job in the Richmond area. He enjoys fine dining with his girlfriend in SF, reading, floating, podcasts, and is always learning something new.  Agreeing with Coach Glassman in that the needs for Olympic athletes and your grandparents differ by degree, not kind, he is a big proponent of the idea that scaling IS what CrossFit is about. He’s excited to share his love of CrossFit with members at Cypher and is always up for some CrossFit Games trivia.

Amber Davis, Cypher Coach

Coach Amber’s journey into CrossFit began in 2015. This was the most recent link in the chain of many sports and exercise related activities she has enjoyed throughout her life. During her earlier years she was most commonly found playing soccer, while in high school she also participated in lacrosse, polocrosse, basketball, and volleyball to name a few. Upon entering college she was introduced to weightlifting. This new found interest has captivated her ever since. Concurrently, while staying true to lifting weights, she also found an interest in running, cycling and swimming. In fact, it was during a run that I was solicited by Mauricio to try CrossFit, and the rest — you can say — is history.
Coach Amber also has a full-time job working for the State of California. In her spare time, she enjoys making ethnic cuisines from scratch, reading, kayaking, and exploring new trails with her dog, Ara.

Roland Dong, Cypher Coach

A Bay Area native, Roland grew up not being particularly athletic. Although he earned the Presidential Fitness Award multiple times in elementary school (which required you to score higher than 75% of your peer group in various physical tests such as push-ups, sit-ups, shuttle run, etc.), that did not translate to athletic pursuits. He did not get formally involved in sports until college at UC Berkeley, where he joined the taekwondo club, competing and later managing the multi-national championship collegiate team. As part of his training, Roland started lifting weights, and fell in love with fitness.

After graduating college, Roland worked in the computer software industry, but also decided to get certified as a Personal Trainer. Additionally, he found the sport of Dragonboat Racing for which he then competed for more than a dozen years, including races in China and Canada.

In 2009, Roland was introduced to CrossFit by a friend who played Golf for Stanford. She invited him to two free “Community Day” workouts before he eventually joined a CrossFit gym in January 2010. Right away, he knew that CrossFit was the future of fitness, and got his coaching certification a few short months later. 

Roland  believes that fitness is for everyone, and that CrossFit is not only an extremely efficient way to get fit, but a fun activity that can improve your life in many other ways.

Outside the gym, Roland is an ice cream enthusiast, spends far too much time on social media, and occasionally binges on Netflix.

Alfredo Mendoza, Cypher Coach

Coach Alfredo’s journey into CrossFit began in 2017.  He has been involved in various sports at a young age, beginning with soccer in the Richmond and San Pablo youth league.  As a kid, he has always aspired to be the best and to compete in everything he can. He idolized various professional athletes and fell in love with the thrill of winning and losing in competition and participating.  There is almost no sport or activity he would love to be a part of. He loves watching various sports and considers himself a sports junkie. In high school, he ventured out to join cross country, football, swimming and more.  And in college, mix martial arts fell into the mix as well. Since then, he has remained consistent with his weight training and focusing on staying fit and healthy.

Forward a couple years and he found himself missing the adrenaline rush of competition and facing a new challenge.  CrossFit was something he did not have in mind and did not even know much about. Finally, he took a chance at CrossFit cypher and booked a No-Sweat Intro.  He quickly embraced the challenge to learn various movements and improve his strength. He became passionate for what Cypher values are and the positive impact CrossFit Cypher can bring to every individual.   

Coach Alfredo seeks to inspire others to challenge themselves physically and mentally because he believes the greatest feeling in the world is when one discovers their untapped potential for mental perseverance and strength.  Being a sports fanatic, he believes that everyone has a bit of World Series or Super Bowl moment within them, that special “Awe!” moment of achievement. His hobbies include dancing and performing, outdoor activities like running with his dog and fishing, and home garage projects.
